Job Description:

Education:
Graduation with a bachelors degree in forestry or environmental / conservation sciences, from a recognized university; or graduation from a recognized university with a degree in a related field combined with acceptable experience in the forestry and/or natural resources fields.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation with a masters or Ph.D. degree in forestry or environmental sciences, from a recognized university.

Experience:
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in forest management and planning
Experience in applying and synthesizing scientific research findings and prediction modeling outputs
Experience in transferring scientific and technical knowledge to forest management practitioners and policy makers through workshops, presentations, and report writing.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in leading applied research studies in forestry.
Experience in supervising technical staff and students.
Experience in conducting climate change risk and/or vulnerability assessments.

Challenge:
A significant portion of the research conducted at the Northern Forestry Centre is in the area of climate change impacts and adaptation science. This directed research is part of a national climate change impacts and adaptation project that aims to address information and knowledge gaps that may be preventing or inhibiting the development and implementation of adaptation plans and strategies. However, climate change is a complex and multi-faceted issue. There is a growing need for awareness raising, networking, education, technology transfer, consultation, practical knowledge capture, science-policy integration, and development of communities of practice in the area of impacts assessment and adaptation. Moreover there are very few individuals in Canada who's sole job function and mandate is to facilitate science - policy - forest policy linkages in the area of climate change impacts and adaptation. There a number challenges and potential rewards associated with this position. There is not precedent for the challenges that climate change poses to the forest sector. New and innovative approaches may be needed for managing forests and for ensuring that management is conducted using the best information available. The position affords the opportunity to communicate and network with scientists and researchers as well as forest managers. There is the potential for significant reward in terms of facilitating and observing real changes forestry practices and approaches that result from the work that the person in this position will undertake. There are significant opportunities for learning, teaching, and mentoring.
