Accelerated Reduction/Elimination Toxics (ARET) Program
“The 1994 ARET challenge officially came to a close at the end of the 2000 calendar year. ARET was an industry led voluntary challenge program which ran from 1994 through 2000. ARET attracted the participation of 318 facilities from 171 companies representing 8 major Canadian industrial sectors. Collectively these participants achieved a total reduction in releases to the environment of almost 28,000 tonnes of toxic substances. Complete results for the final 2 years of the program will be published in the upcoming Environmental Leaders 4 report. Since the conclusion of the original ARET program, Environment Canada has been working with many stakeholders to design a successor program, ARET 2.
