Hello everyone! I am currently searching for information on the type and locations of combined sewer overflows across GTA and also the mechanisms used to regulate CSO diversion flow rates and direction. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am currently a student in the environmental engineering program at the U of A and did a case study on some the techniques that the city of Edmonton is implementing over the next 25 years.

In Edmonton, at various places throughout the combined part of the sewer system, RTC (real time control) gates are being installed. What these gates do is, during events, allow the maximum flow in to the downstream interceptor sewers without overflow in to the river. In doing this, a portion of the system becomes surcharged. This is why these gates must have real time monitoring controls in place. Once the critical surcharge level is reached, the gates will open slightly to allow a greater flow rate (unfortunately at this time, overflow will occur).

These levels can be tailored to each overflow structure as required.
