Postnum: 64 EntryID:542
I have an industrial background in the environmental management area and I would like to pursue a consulting-related position.

Are there any current environmental consultants who can give advice on how to gain work experience in the consulting field? Areas of concentration may include ISO 14001 implementation, Phase Site assessments, and environmental auditing.

Environmental auditing requires certification, unless you are doing internal auditing for an employer. Look at companies like SGS that offer extensive training...usually short courses: 1 -2 weeks long with a written exam. Such companies also hire consultants and auditors.

you can get into a job to implement 14001 etc without actually being a consultant. A lot of companies (especially automotive related) that are not yet registered prefer to hire a full time body that can focus on the standard and environmental management. A job like this involves site assessments and network and find out who is hiring " environmental coordiators, specialists, scientists...." the titles can go on forever.

Volunteer with a consulting firm and ask if you can tag along with an experienced consultant.

Attend as many seminars and conferences as you can afford to. This website is a good source of upcoming events.

I was in a similar situation 5 years ago. I am now a Senior Environmantal Engineer, (title only, no degree), for an Automotive suplier. I managed this by working through a contractor service called On Site Environmental. They Landed me plant level "EHS Coordinator" job based on less experiance than you site and then I worked hard to get experiance and training at every oportunity. I got lucky through some netwoking at conventions and have more than doubled my wages in those 5 years. I'm not sure if they are active in the great white north but your experiance does not sound like it is all Canada specific. In any event I would try some contract labor speciality companies and give the wheel a spin. Environmental is a wide open field, at least in the US, and it is quite often personality and preserverance that will get you ahead rather than specific experiance or a degree. Mike J.
